When I stepped outside my door at Langton I was greeted by the croak of a Raven passing overhead. Undoubtedly the large silhouette I later saw perched upon a field gate at the park and National Trust boundary was also a Raven, perhaps even the same one!
Beneath the high cloud cover there was great visibility giving views of the entire Isle of Wight. Westward the sight of both St. Albans Head Chapel and Lookout offered a tempting draw to potential walkers. Out to sea, sun beams pierced through the cloud and gave the sea a golden sheen. Many small white wavelets decorated the sea.
On leaving the centre a Robin flew across my path whilst a single Dunnock lingered by the bonfire ash pile. Its pinstripes and grey breast feathers were ruffled by the breeze. On the sides of the lighthouse road cutting a few yellow Goats Beard flowers made the most of the sunshine. Looking initially like frost it was in fact the wispy seeds of Old Mans Beard that cloaked the bridge side scrub. Those Sycamore leaves, still clinging on (thanks to the shelter of neighbouring scrub cover) rustled in the wind. Upon the coastal download the grassy sward was then the vocal chords of the breeze.
There were plenty of signs of Badger activity with one latrine on the coastal ridge having six pits. Elsewhere there was a cow pat size pile. Undigested Sloe skins resembled miniature Mussels shell thanks to their shape and bluish colour. It appeared as if a Magpie was inspecting the neatly stacked stones associated with a dry-stone wall rebuild. A second such bird swept low over the meadow then up into an Ivy clad Hawthorn perch. One of these birds chose to watch me leave from a wall perch beside a trough.
As I headed back, I heard above the wares what initially sounded like a truncated Herring Gull call. However, it was a pair of Peregrine Falcons having a brief discussion during flight. A Jay was seen to fly low over the upper gully scrub only to return after perhaps having retrieved some acorn. On passing the Small Copse the Hereford cattle had move off the investigate other pastures but their pats remained!
