Beside the learning centre the fluffy buds of Willow were starting to open. It was a delight to see nearly a square metre of Blackthorn in blossom and leaf upon the Common Wares. Oddly this patch which faced in land, had neighbours with small tight buds only. Near the walling centre, fresh tendrils of Wild Madder extended their climb up through the thorns. Adjacent Viburnum showed white flowers. Most amazingly throughout winter there appears to have been a constant flush of Yellow flowers on Wild Cabbage beside a stone pile in the upper gully. Meanwhile, there were occasional Elder, and Hawthorn leaves open.
I was kneeling to photograph a Yellow Fungi growing out of a cow pat whilst a Robin sang heartily nearby. I believed the fungi was Protostropharia semiglobata or Dung Roundhead. I checked out for myself the abundance of Orchid Basal Rosettes on Lighthouse Green.
It was a fresh to strong breeze. Waves at the gully mouth smashed into the cliffs a sent spray up onto the Tilly Whim waves cut platform. Spurts through the blow hole sent misty clouds of sea spray drifting inland. Despite the rough sea a Shag dove from the surface a very loose raft of thirty Guillemots rode the swell. Occupancy of the sea cliff cave was such that five Guillemots resorted to occupying the sloping rock surface. Perched above in ascending order was a Great Black Back Gull, Herring Gull and Jackdaw. Beyond them just amongst the grassy cliff top margin sat a Peregrine Falcon which eagerly eyed the movements of the Jackdaw flock. A pair of Fulmars carried on regardless with their cliff side flight.
When I was near the Lighthouse complex, I heard rapid flight. A Rock Dove raced past follow by possibly a Peregrine Falcon. However, the predator in pursuit appeared not to be putting in maximum effort, nevertheless both birds disappeared out of sight over the cliff top.
Back upon the wares I went towards what I thought was the sound of a Song Thrush braking a Snail’s shell only to discover that it was clashing Hawthorn branches constrained beside a dry-stone wall.
