It does not shine in vain though
That multicolour bend
A grand prismatic tableau

I made my way up to Durlston under light rain this morning, the streetlights still glowing orange in the twilight. The rain intensified as I entered the Woodlands, the pitter patter of raindrops on the canopy above the main sound on an otherwise quiet morning. The occasional rattle of a Magpie or squawk of a Jay was also audible. I passed a few Jelly Ear and Yellow Brain Fungus (sometimes referred to as Witches Butter) residing on various pieces of rotting detritus.
As I left the woods the sky had cleared noticeably, its rich blue hue tinged with white and red as the rising sun illuminated small banks of cumulous passing overhead. As I watched this scene I caught the form of a large bird passing overhead, a Grey Heron. I certainly didn’t expect to see that.
Passing out onto the Meadows the chirps of Goldfinches resounded from all directions, as well as the calls of Great Tits and Blue Tits. Egghead Mottlegill were still to be found growing on cow pats, with our Hereford Cattle keeping the Saxon Field well stocked.
Further along on my journey, I passed the Dewpond in field 3, unsurprisingly no longer dry. There appeared to be some movement in its murky waters, but I didn’t want to wade in to investigate up close.
Returning to the Learning Centre via Lighthouse Road, a Green Woodpecker fluttered off across the Downland, with a few Jackdaws circling around in the skies above.
Katie informed me that this morning she sighted a few Fieldfare skulking around in a patch of Hawthorn, and a Roe Deer in her back garden.
