A single Durlston pathway is bursting with life
With chattering Blackbirds, Robins and Magpies
Grey Squirrels and Goldcrests are also rife
And over the trees comes the glorious sunrise
A pair of Great Tits sing a duet together
And a tiny Chaffinch hides away in a Hawthorn
The morning sunbeams combine with the weather
And an orange mantle by each cloud is worn
I head to the paddock with high expectations
Sure enough a Song Thrush is there in full voice
I listen spellbound to its sublime orations
A performance like this is my favourite choice
The rich clack of Stonechats was what I heard next
Alongside tweets from noisy Wrens
I spotted a shrub covered in small red flecks
A Cotoneaster bush with berries by the tens
A Sparrowhawk dives on a Wood Pigeon
A sudden flash of danger and strife
The prey escapes by a tiny smidgeon
Just an hour after dawn and it’s fighting for its life
On my stroll down lighthouse slope I made a discovery
Some spectacular fungi had sprung up round there
Field Blewits and Saffron Webcaps, both looking lovely
Such a fine find is too good not to share
Back at the Centre, one last observation
A Pied Wagtail appeared just before I was done
My patrol was a delight for its whole duration
So come up to Durlston and join in the fun
