Once more the Swallows are sweeping across the skies, the constant flittering of their wings catching the light as they moved, a wonderful sight. As I walked up the drove I felt as if I was being bombarded by these delicate birds, which were only just missing me.
Undulating across the sky as well were Grey Wagtails, the movement of the wagtails was quite distinctive, as was the call when they eventually produced it.
As I looked down into the gully a female Roe Deer was retuning my gaze, her coat in the middle of changing from the gorgeous chestnut of the summer to a duller darker brown. Nearby a young Deer was also spotted, this one taking less notice of me more of the food on offer from the hedgerow. A little further on the points of the antlers of a male Roe were visible above the clump of Gorse.
The white mass of Old Man’s Beard rambling over the top of the Hawthorn was alive it seemed with Chiffchaffs flitting between the wisps and the twigs.
A large charm of Goldfinches tinkled as they flew through the air, the gold feathers flashing as they landed in the middle of the large patch of Wild Carrot and Woolly Thistle heads.
Just outside the window as I write, a Wren is creeping through the Buddliea and a Goldcrest is in the Escallonia a great opportunity to see this bird in close-up. The orange flash on its head and white feather edges on the wings easily seen.
