In such glorious sunshine some twenty one Red Admirals put in an appearance within the coast path sunshine! A single Bumble Bee preferred to flit about under the dappled shade exploring a carpet of Ivy. About the scrub crown a couple of smaller butterflies made the briefest appearance, Skippers perhaps?
On the sun drenched Tamarisk and Blackthorn below the Globe again was awash with birds. A Wren upon an ancient tamarisk trunk appeared to be feeing upon the spore heads of a branching lichen. It was Blackthorn where I eventually caught sight of a Blackcap whilst the dozen Chiff Chaffs were less particular as to where they flittered. Although not an unusual bird it was refreshing to see a Chaffinch again!
Overhead the was the regular chatter of scores of Goldfinches and the mixed bag of Swallows and House Martins still feeding up before their journeys oversees. Robins continued to be a plenty so much so that they seemed to appear in defensive pairs having brief bursts of song either side of the coast path or over blocks of scrub. Blackbirds were seen and their alarm calls especially in the cover below caravan Terrace Bridge. It was not until the diagonal path entered the woodland cover that a Great Tit was seen amongst the tips of a Sycamore (many of which held onto their “helicopter” seed cases).
From the cliff tops I got to see a Peregrine Falcon performing a fly past the sea cliff face. At one point it flew to the observation point and turned to fly back to Durlston Head. Upon the wave cut platform below the Globe a Shag rested as did a Greater Black Back Gull half way up / down the cliff face in the opposite direction. Herring Gull calls were heard and a few seen on Durlston Bay shoreline but the most obvious appearance was of those following a westward bound red hulled Fishing Vessel E4999.
At one point some of the Jackdaws loitered in Tamarisk beside the observation point whilst a pair of Carrion Crows sat higher in the tree tops calling. Perhaps this was due to the following passage eastward at eye level of two Ravens one of which made the briefest call!
