Crawling beside the path were the trumpet flowers of Field Bindweed. Upon the wall, beside the gate, the delicate flower stems of the shiny leaved Black Bryony were a first sighting for me. In South Field Meadow Vetchling was only evident by its stem of overlapping leaves, rather like playing cards spread out. Yellow flowers were shown by Hay Rattle, Creeping Buttercup and Horseshoe Vetch. To me, shades of blue were shown by Pale Flax and Tufted Vetch. Amongst the sward foam patches of Cuckoo Spit protected Leaf Hopper larvae inside.
Today the Small Copse had reached near full leaf canopy cover. Amongst the hedgerows white Hawthorn blossom stood out. Entering Saxon the sounds of Skylark, Chaffinch and Chiff Chaff rang out. Small yellow ball flowers indicated Black Medic, whilst feathery leaves meant Wild Carrot. The later upon an ant hill had spread its leaves looking like a starfish. Beneath Sycamore shade flowered a solitary Stinking Iris. A simple white rose-like flower merely belonged to a Blackberry bush.
Distinctive False Oak Grass heads greeted me in the upper gully whilst a few Ox Eye Daisies showed in its namesake meadow. Not only had the quantity of yellow flowers of Charlock increased so too had the stone hearing pile beside. Will I ever see a reptile basking upon said pile? Bracken crept up the quarried landscape as a Swallow flew over.
Before ascending to the coastal ridge, I checked the delicate miniature flowers of Crosswort. Individual strands of web stretched between Gorse bushes. Leaves of nightshade species Bittersweet hid amongst brambles. I heard Magpie chuckle before discovering eggshell remains, perhaps from said bird’s raid. The trio of Jackdaws were heard before the descended to the coastal slopes. A few Early Purple Orchids were beside the wide trample and grazed decent to the Lighthouse. Sadly, no Gentians… Both Apple and Pear fruits had begun on trees near Horseshoe Bridge. A nearby Sycamore dangled flowers only slightly lighter green than its leaves. It was a delight to see, from a distance, colourful pink / blue? cushion of Thrift below the Lighthouse. At the centre a Blue Tit entered its nesting box then a Goldfinch pair made an appearance. Guillemot egg remains were found in the castle ground, left by a Raven no doubt.
