A Jay flying across, its white rump and buffy pink colouration easily spotted below the grey cloud cover.

As I headed towards the cliffs the high pitched calls of Firecrest heard from amongst the Holm Oaks, a tiny crest spotted as I searched upwards in the canopy, hopefully breeding this year, while a flock of Goldfinches tinkled past, landing in the Elder, whose flat flowerheads are now looking magnificent.

The Wild Clary, although covered in deep purple flowers is not spectacular like the Wild Gladious (brilliant cerise pink flowers) or the Black Mustard (yellow flowers).

The chatting call of Stonechats as they perched on the Blackthorn, made me look at these birds, the adult male with a white collar and orange chest, the juveniles more speckled and brown.

Many of the dangling white flowers of the Tamarisk are dotted with the frothy bubbles of Cuckoo Spit, which are the protective home to developing Froghoppers.

On the cliffs a Herring Gull was sat on its nest, while on the ledge above the Great Black-backed Gull seems to have abandoned its nest.  A constant flitting in and out as the Guillemots come and go, their wings whirring.

A Rock Pipit, rose and then dropped as it sung, landing amongst the round heads of the Thrift.

From the downland the scratchy calling of a Common Whitethroat was competing with the melodious song of a Skylark, in full voice above the Ox-eye Daisy covered meadow.

Coming round the corner a female Sika Deer stood, the fur on her back covered in faint pale dots, as she faced me the thick pale ‘eyebrows’ could be seen, which to me always make this species look grumpy!

Across the path a Greater Bloody-nosed Beetle was slowly trundling, while a 7-Spot Ladybird was resting on a Kidney Vetch and a red headed Cardinal Beetle was on a Bulbous Buttercup.

The greeny-yellow Crosswort seems to be having a good year, as does the strange Adder’s-tongue Fern, both with large patches in flower.
