The cawing calling of a group of 12 Rooks brought this flock of dark blue / black corvids to my attention, their dirty white beaks making them easily identifiable as they wandered about amongst the yellow carpet of Cowslips.

The more delicate tuneful song of Chaffinches was competing for my ear, along with the scratchy rattle of a Common Whitethroat, both of these birds were perched on the top of the leaf covered Hawthorn.

Ahead of me, the fairly unusual sight of a Rabbit as it bounded across into the Bramble scrub.  A Speckled Wood took flight from the grass and a Wall Brown fluttered up from the stone.  Over the last couple of days reports have come in of other butterflies including the first Adonis Blues, Common Blues and Dingy Skippers.

As I searched amongst the short turf a couple of bright purple stars appeared, the gorgeous flowers of the Early English Gentian.  These delicate flowers are only 1cm and very easy to miss!

In the same area the bright blue and white flowers of Chalk Milkwort, the yellow of Horseshoe Vetch and the tall round heads of Salad Burnet distracted me from my searching, as did the Early Spider Orchids, many of which are now coming to an end already.

The mass of Blackthorn has now turned to bright green as the leaves emerge after the blossom has fallen, a Blackbird was perched on the top, its bright yellow beak opening wide as it sung loudly.

Swooping overhead a scattering of Swallows, while a couple of Swifts have been seen in the last few days.

The strange sight on one large patch of bright yellow flower covered Gorse, with a section covered in a thin veil of silken web, wrapping around the spikes and flowers.

On the cliff the Guillemots have begun laying, their large single egg being incubated on their feet and under their belly.
