Saturday 8th October, 2022

A beautiful bright morning with the low sun casting long shadows behind the trees, and warming the park. Birds sound from all around the Centre. Crows, Jackdaws, and Magpies call from the Reservoir Copse and Long Meadow, whilst a Raven croaks from towards the Large Copse. However the noisiest chitchat comes from the Robins who chirp to one an other across the car parks.

My walk takes me down the Dell where a Carrion Crow calls out. In the background, I listen to the continuous low hum of waves on the shore in Durlston Bay. Although many of the flowers have gone over here, a pretty display of Fuchsia remains, their pink flowers drooping down with upturned petals like little ballerinas.

The surrounding trees rustle with the commotion of Squirrels. They climb the branches of the Holm Oaks, venturing to the most precarious of limbs in the search for acorns.

A melody of bird song echoes around Caravan Terrace, with Chiffchaffs and Meadow Pipits singing to one another. A couple the Chiffchaffs float around a large Sycamore Tree; exploring the undersides of it’s fading yellow leaves looking for insects to eat.

I continue down Durlston Head to see the stunning sunrise upon a calm sea, and clear blue sky – not a cloud in sight! I can see the water only very gently lapping against the shore, so it’s impressive how much the sound carries up over the slopes. I think I briefly hear an Oystercatcher below.

Along the clifftop, glimpses between the towering Tamarisk reveal views of Anvil Point Lighthouse, along with Herring Gulls, and Shags, all patrolling along the coast.
