The fragrant smell ascending from the Buddleia made a lovely morning welcome to the country park, now just turning brown but still awash with beautiful Butterflies on sunny days. A noisy fight broke out between two Magpies chasing their way through the nearby trees and finally flying off leave but dust behind.
Blackbird and Chaffinch were moving and chirping around a Hawthorn tree reminding me of Cicely Mary Barker ‘The Song of The Hawthorn Fairy’
These thorny branches bore the May
So many months ago,
That when the scattered petals lay
Like drifts of fallen snow,
“This is the story’s end,” you said;
But O, not half was told!
For see, my haws are here instead,
And hungry birdies shall be fed
On these when days are cold.
Blue tits moved around an Ash tree, then a Greenfinch came to join it, while Sparrows peaked around the wooden electricity pole. Above two Herring Gulls flew west, calling as they went, and a group of 10 flew north, their wings outstretched and gliding in silence. The Waxing Crescent moon was bright and bold, perfectly atmospheric for tonight’s Enchanted Cinema performance, for which a few tickets are still available.
Restharrow, Selfheal, Tufted Vetch, Black Knapweed and Field Scabious are all still in flower along the meadow edges while above Swallows swoop and glide just above my head. A large group of 40+ Goldfinches flew overhead from small Copse heading east, gathering numbers daily.
It is set to be a busy day at the Country Park, with live music from the ‘Purbeck International Chamber Music Festival’ and the outdoor performance from ‘Enchanted Cinema’ this evening. For more information please visit our events page on our website.
