Friday 3rd September 2021

An autumnal morning for a stroll, with the calling of Goldfinches and flocks of Chaffinches in the air.  Flitting about were good numbers of Swallows and some Sand Martins, always wonderful to watch.

Down by the sea, the cliffs were providing tiered perches for the birds, lowest down was a Great Black-backed Gull, just above a juvenile Shag and on the highest tier a Peregrine.

Swinging by another Peregrine Falcon its grey pointed wings making it look very different to the Jackdaws and Feral Pigeons flying in the same area.

Patches of pale lilac, yellowy-green and deep yellow from the Sea Aster, Rock Samphire and Golden Samphire, along the coast plus right on the edge the Durlston Rock Sea Lavender.

Strutting around Lighthouse Green two Wheatears, a sandy colour, dark mask and white rump, while in the nearby scrub Willow Warbler, Dunnock, Blue Tit and Spotted Flycatcher.

Many plants are now baring their fruit, including Rose Hips, Hawthorn Haws and Blackthorn Sloes.  However on the leaf of a Dog Rose was what looked like a small pinky-orange ball, this was in fact a Pea Gall, produced by Diplolepis nervosa a Gall Wasp.

More flowers catching my eye included the Autumn Gentian, Burnet Saxifrage, Carline Thistle and Red Bartsia.

In the dark of the night the sounds of Tawny Owls calling to each other, and a superb sight as one of these Tawny Owls landed on the ground in front of my, pulled and tore at something on the earth before taking flight again. It always surprises me how pale they are underneath when in flight.

Back to the centre, where a dead Roe Deer fawn was reported, a quick inspection of the body of this beautiful delicate creature, saw puncture wounds on its neck and rear, a definitive sign of dog attack.  Such an unnecessary waste.  This is one of the reasons why dogs should be on a lead if they are not under close control.
