A Robin was singing its sweet morning song from the top of a telephone wire, its bright red breast shining against the crystal clear blue sky. A group of Sparrows chirped from a Rose bush and a Magpie cried from a Hawthorn.
Martins flew all around filling the sky, I thought a Merlin was being chased by them, brave little birds, I thought. Seeing Katie later she confirmed it was the other way around. Along a footpath Agrimony was still in flower and large patches of Fleabane stood thick and bright yellow.
I saw many butterflies this morning including, Marbled White, Meadow Brown, Common Blue, Green-veined White, Gatekeeper, Red Admiral, Small White and Large White. It is always so lovely to see them around the meadows.
A group of Blue Tits flew nosily around a dense hedge-line and a charm of Goldfinches pecked at seed heads in the large uncut patches of grass. I was admiring the deep purple of some Elderberries, which were like ripe Blackberries and the vivid crimson of Hawthorn Berries, when I noticed a bright red Robins Pin Cushion.
Linnets flew all around one of the meadows searching in the cut grass for tasty bugs. A pair of Blackbirds flew up to nearby trees, while a Song Thrush stayed on the ground not worried about my presence. Up on the Downs Swallows stole the show swooping around the divots of the hill.
A lovely view of a Redstart almost silhouetted but recognisable from its red flank as the sun beamed off it. As I walked under an Ash Tree I looked up towards the sun, it’s leaves almost see through, and across the path a Whitethroat sang from the top of a Hawthorn. Spotted and Pied Flycatcher were also seen by Katie this morning.
