Saturday 22nd February 2020

Another really blustery day ahead, so to start a trip to the coast path above Tilly Whim to enjoy the sight of the sea.  Here the water was churning in from the west crashing with huge power against the Portland limestone cliffs causing a mass of white salty spray.

To add to the sound the Blow Hole was expelling water with a loud whoosh, this never fails to make to me watch and wait for ‘just one more blow’!

A quick peek to see whether the Guillemots were around – not surprisingly they weren’t, nothing on the water or the ledge.  Flying past were a few Gulls including 2 adult Great Black-backed Gulls and a group of Herring Gulls including this year’s young who are still very mottled brown in feather colour.

Strutting across the path was a Rock Pipit, a short walk then a flutter before a walk again, my view was very good so the subtle differences between this and the Meadow Pipit which took flight a little later from amongst the rough downland grass were obvious.

Off across the National Nature Reserve to have a look at some of walls that the volunteers are building, they are looking good so a great a job.

Just by one of them, a sudden movement was spotted ‘out of the corner of my eye’ and a long brown furry Weasel bounded up along and then into the wall.  A really pleasing sighting, especially as it then popped its head out again to look at me before disappearing again.

The ground across the meadows is still extremely wet and boggy as the clay layers are not allowing the water to sink down through the strata, as I paddled across a particularly bad patch a Blackbird was heard, followed soon after by a Song Thrush.

Flitting into the Gorse, which is covered in bright yellow flower was an orange breasted Stonechat.   Near the car park our Cherry Plum is awash with off-white coloured blossom, while a few Daffodils are just standing in the strong winds
