Tuesday 7th January 2020

Off to the downland this morning where the sight of 5 Bullfinches perched in the bare branches of a Sycamore stood out, its was the three bright pink chests of the males especially noticeable, while the duller colours of the females could be seen once I diverted my attention from the glorious males.  With at least another two calling nearby this is proving to be a very good year for this species.

The Hereford cattle are now grazing the Tor Grass amongst other plants in the ‘lighthouse Field.  To keep them from escaping along the coast path or to Swanage you will find gates – please shut them and electric fences – please be aware.

Walking through the early pale yellow sunlight was landing on the ginger rumps of the cattle making a lovely sight across the National Nature Reserve.

This was added to, by the splashes of golden yellow flowered Gorse scattered across.  From the depths of these spiky plants came from calling of a Wren, a sudden blast of noise erupting from this tiny bird.

An opportunity of watching a Blackbird – not a bird we often spend much time on – as this male stood and preened on the outer most branches of the evergreen Holly bush, its yellow beak reflecting the sunlight as it twitched.

Once again the coast alive with seabirds, the Guillemots both on the ledges and the water alongside a few Razorbills back again at last.

Floating along the cliff tops was a single Fulmar, the thin wings providing mastery of the air, every slight twitch and movement altering the path of this amazing tube-nose relative of the albatross.

Just outside the Castle the Daffodil leaves are growing and the buds are forming.

If you are visiting today, the Castle is open as normal, but the café will be closed so that the kitchen floor can be replaced and will re-open on the 16th. Please bear with us – tea and coffee will be available in the atrium in the meantime.
