Saturday 4th January 20120

After a fabulous s unset last night, in the evening gloom, just above my head a blurring and fluttering could be seen as 2 Pipistrelle Bats appeared, silhouetted against the still slightly lit sky. In the background the hooting call of a Tawny Owl was filling the silence.

This morning the churring of Blue Tits caught my ear as they then began to peer into the old bollard, either after shelter or perhaps prospecting for future nesting sites.

The growling sound wafting up from the rocks answered my thoughts of whether the Guillemots were in again, looking out to sea few of their squadrons could be watched, a whirr of wings across the water.

Landing with a bit of a splash on the flat water was a Shag, its crest showing well, the first time I had spotted one this winter.  The bird’s green head colour also more prominent as it is now preparing for breeding.

Obviously one of those mornings as the Peregrine Falcons looked to be doing small displays to each other, the larger female being wooed by the greyer male.

From below the cliffs came the unmistakable call of an Oystercatcher, this black and white bird spotted as it came into Tilly Whim, its long orange beak easy to see.  Rock Pipits also in the area to be both seen and heard.

Some early flowering plants in bloom include the Daisy, with a few of the white composite heads scattered on the grass, the occasional pink flower of Herb Robert in amongst the hedgerows and the yellow Gorse – which is always in bloom somewhere!

The bright pink double berries of Spindle, the smaller paler pink of Japanese Spindle and the white round blobs of Snowberries are just some of the selection of berries to spot.

Corvids galore, with Carrion Crow begin dwarfed by a Raven as both flew overhead, the cackling of Jackdaws along the cliffs and the squawk of the Jay from the woods, nearby Great Tits, Blackbird, Wren and Dunnock watched accompanied by the purring of Wood Pigeons.
