Hey my friend, have you met Herb Robert?

Hedge or kerb he’s growing there Herb Robert

Oooooh – Herb Robert

He flowers all year round

Leaves spread across the ground

Go walking and you’re bound

To see Herb Robert

Oooooh – Herb Robert

A few thin tweets were the first thing to draw my attention this morning, emanating from a pair of Goldcrests skipping about within the branches of a Hawthorn tree. I watched them for a few moments before embarking towards the Large Copse, the chatter of Blackbirds accompanying me as I navigated the muddy paths.

Large Copse revealed little in the way of fungi, with a few patches of Turkey Tail the only notable specimens. I had more luck in the Saxon Field with Egghead Mottlegills and Dung Roundheads both making their homes on piles of cow droppings. The former is a darker brown and more egg shaped (unsurprisingly) with the latter being more yellow and evenly hemispherical. I continued on past the drove, going double time to make it out to the New Land.

As I arrived at the Heron Ground I caught a flash of black and red. Quickdrawing my binoculars I was rewarded with a glimpse of a Bullfinch. Get out there today and spot them my friends, if I can manage to spy one then anyone can. After this memorable victory I continued on, a couple of Wrens tweeting a fanfare for my success. At least that’s what it felt like.

The New Land was quiet and calm, in fact I hadn’t met so much as a soul all morning. Browns and greens of the earth and flora were speckled with red rosehips from Dog Roses, with the chattering calls of Jackdaws the only sounds besides the wind. Leaves of Herb Robert were growing at the path margins, though I didn’t catch sight of any pink flowers. They’ll be around here somewhere.

Returning over the Meadows I noted the continued proliferation of Field Blewits, as well as freshly sprouting Goosegrass, Burdock and Horsetail in areas of recently cleared scrub. Strike while the iron is hot.
