Tuesday 15th October 2019

The moon dominating the sky just as dawn arrived, the huge white orb visible to the west, in the east the sun was rising, providing yellowish-orange shafts of light through the purple-grey clouds.

From the woods came the hooting of a Tawny Owl, another answering it from the Copse, this conversation continuing for some time.

Scuttling through the woods returning late to its sett was a Badger, the grey and white face turning towards me as I stood watching.

Over the cliff edge the Guillemots were standing upon their breeding ledge, just a few but their white winter plumage faces making them look almost like different bird compared to the summer.

Gliding past me was a Peregrine Falcon, its back the colour of slate, a couple of flaps and then floating on the airwaves.

All around me was the sound of twittering, flocks of Swallows swooping past, the light highlighting their deep blue backs.  Rising from the tufts of grass were groups of Meadow Pipits, calling as they moved, the white tail edges flashing, overhead many more passing by.

On the dark red berry laden Hawthorn, Goldfinches galore, again the sun’s rays illuminating their colours magnificently, brilliant flashes of yellow, spots of red and down their backs white squares on a black background where their wings meet.

Chatting from the gully, two Stonechat both perched on the top of the Gorse bush.  Amongst the Sycamore twigs a group of Chaffinches to be seen, their white wing flashes quite distinctive both in the tree and then later in flight.

Crawling across the grassy path was a huge Fox Moth caterpillar, a wonderful ginger brown and black creature bigger than my finger, nearby a Garden Snail oozed across.

Low in the hedgerows the Stinking Iris berries are splitting out of their green sheaths and the occasional pink splash of Herb Robert alongside Yarrow, while in the fields an odd flower of Wild Parsnip shows its yellow head.
