Upon passage from the Reservoir Copse to the Small Copse the Green Woodpecker saw fit to call regularly. On the wooded section of Lighthouse Road, I was initially stumped on seeing a grey finch. Luckily, they were was a pair and the male with its redbreast confirmed that these were Bullfinches. The female at one point held feathery seeds in her beak.
At the walling centre Hedge Bindweed was succeeding in colonising a pile “hearting”. Beside stood Yarrow with its white umbel resembling flower heads and feathery leaves. Strangely Yarrow had been used to stem bleeding, yet it was thought to cause nose bleeds if put up the nostrils. On the opposite side of the road amongst the scrub, Wild Madder had shed many flowers revealing stalks that resembled the Island of Man flag’s “trio of legs”. Fellow climber Bryony showed “bunches of grapes”.
Crow Garlic’s “sea mine” / conker like seed heads had developed twisted whisker tendrils upon the wares. Gorse showed no flowers of its own but support the climbers Honeysuckle and Old Mans Beard whose flowers gave some colour. The Gorse instead was laden with seed pods. From the low scrub alongside the dry-stone wall beside the Goat Plot scrub a Kestrel appeared and maintained this low-level flight into gully.
Standing in the Goat Plot I heard the call of Peregrine Flacon before I saw a pair materialise from the west. This communication seemed to cause the birds to separate such that one turned back from whence they had come. Perhaps they were planning a cliff side raid upon the unsuspecting Rock Doves whom had happily dropped to their roosts. Amongst the plots sward a pair of Six Spot Burnet Moths mated upon a Field Scabious flower. Marbled Whites and Meadows Browns fluttered whilst Field Grasshopper leapt between the vegetation.
Just as I was thinking of the fact I had seen a duo of Ravens on NT land on recent walks, I was amazed to see a quartet fly in from the west. There was a regular quiet vocal exchange between two and it appeared that this might have been an adult instructing a juvenile. One Raven chose to fly ahead of the trio, however they all returned only to vanish out of sight over the meadows.
