Saturday 22nd June 2019

What a glorious morning, the sea like glass as I looked out across the blue expanse, it was so flat that the numerous markers from the divers on the Kyarra were extremely obvious.

From the water the only sound was that of Guillemots washing and taking off, while from the ledges they were growling and the smell was wafting up very strongly, hitting the nose with a fishy pong.

A couple of Razorbills bobbed on the water, one held a floppy sand eel in its beak, perhaps deciding whether to eat it itself or take it to its chick which would still be standing high up on the cliff.

Flying past were a couple of large Cormorants, bigger than the Shags which were skimming low to the water.

Hunting along the cliff a was a Peregrine Falcon, I was able to look down on the slate grey back as it headed purposefully east.

These wildlife sightings were a continuation from the fantastic boat trip last night, when we also saw Gannets with one flying right over the boat, Sandwich Terns diving around us, a few Kittiwakes and at least 16 Puffins, plus Barrel  Jellyfish.

Two young Kestrels were showing well, the slightly fluffy feathering and dull blue beak giving their age away, as well as their pathetic plaintive calling when a parent appeared!

In the meadows the flowers are still magnificent with Common Spotted Orchids the most numerous orchid, but Southern Marsh and Bee Orchids are also in bloom.  The tall yellow spikes of Agrimony are amongst the Meadow Barley as are Pale Flax, Wild Carrot, Meadow Vetchling and Corky-fruited Water Dropwort.

Numerous Meadow Browns are fluttering, as are a few Marbled Whites and Small Heaths.  Landing on the shiny heart shaped leaf of a Black Bryony was a Large Skipper, its gingery colour being highlighted by the sunshine.  Along the coast a few Lulworth Skippers were in flight and a Yellow Shell moth flittered into a pink flowered Dog Rose.
