Despite the grey skies, the delicate Pale Flax flowers were all turned towards the sunlight, all of the flowers slightly closed as they awaited for the sunshine to emerge.
Ahead of me the delightful sight of a female Roe Deer slowly walking across the pathway as I looked more closely alongside her was a tiny fawn, its head not quite up to the height of the does underbelly.
Bounding onto a low dry-stone wall was a Weasel, this predator, about the size of a long thin furry sausage, was carrying a small mouse in its mouth, so hopefully indicating that it had young waiting for breakfast nearby.
Large patches of Crosswort, lemon yellow and pale green combination emerging alongside clumps of more vibrant orangy-yellow Bird’s-foot Trefoil and more delicate Horseshoe Vetch.
Scattered in the meadows are the single purple pea flowers of Common Vetch and the beginning of the next tranche of Orchids, these being the Common Spotted Orchid.
Appearing on the top of white blossom capped Hawthorn was a Long-tailed Tit carrying a green caterpillar in its beak, while nearby the chattering of young House Sparrows could be heard. If you pop into the Castle you can see how both the Great Tits and Blue Tits are getting on, their youngsters now 10 or so days old.
From the highest point of the Field Maple tree came the wheezing sound of a Greenfinch, this bird perched erect and it emitted its ‘song’. More birdsong came from the Common Whitethroats, Song Thrush, Blackbird, Blackcap and Dunnocks, while high above me the Skylark was again performing its glorious song.
The brilliant yellow flowers of Biting Stonecrop, the blue of the Green Alkanet and that of Bugle add more colour to the day.
The Guillemots are on eggs, but these are due to start hatching any day now, the view of the ledges visible in the Castle where we now have the ability to move the camera, so come in and have a look.
