Two Rangers set out in separate directions this morning in hope of doubling the discoveries. At the Castle over a dozen of the Daffodils exposed yellow petals whilst two were open. Work had progressed in the dell revealing views including that of the bridge. The terrace itself had a light dust of frost as did the foot of the Globe steps where the invasive non-native Greater Periwinkle had previously flowered. Recent scrub clearance means we will await the return of this flower.
One then another Shag set off from Durlston Head to fly towards Peveril Point. Whilst just of the head itself a sunbeam reach across the sea. Upon arrival at the Observation Point some thirty Jackdaws scattered along the cliff top. Both Herring Gulls and Great black-backed gulls were about the cliffs some in flight as well as our Fulmars. One of the later remained on its cliff perch and exchanged vocals with visiting mate or neighbour. The race off St. Albans Head was in clear view as blue haled small trawling vessel headed east near Anvil Point Lighthouse. Amongst the fifty-strong raft of Guillemots upon the swell were included at least seven Razorbills. Another fifty sea birds occupied the cliff cave.
Our second Ranger’s visit to caravan terrace led to a Goldcrest sighting. Other discoveries on a meadow biased meander brought forth Song Thrush, Green Woodpecker, Sparrowhawk, Long Tailed Tits as well as a Raven. A Rock Pipit appeared near the gully mouth where there were crashing waves and much swash.
Again, a pair of Magpies were loitering near to the Quarr. The Small Copse had a Carrion Crow calling from a Sycamore which appear to trigger the noisy departure of a Jay. The calling Crow itself also flew off in pursuit of its partner.
