Above the Mile Markers on the road side bedrock exposure I no longer found signs of Gentians, however, the thin soils supported Rest Harrow, Crosswort, Eyebright, Centuary and Horsehoe Vetch.
Even from above the Mile Markers I spotted a small raft of Guillemots off shore. I was surprised at the strength of the current which gently but swiftly carrier the birds west. A brief glance at the Guillemot cave confirmed there were plenty of adults still on the ledge. Amongst the Tilly Whim Tamarisk a Blue Tit put in an appearance. Back on land I managed to set up a Green Woodpecker which rapidly flew west then turned 360 degrees to fly past me in the opposite direction. Some interaction was heard between Herring Gulls and what turned out to be a Heron which headed east close to the cliff tops. Below the Mile Markers a family of four Magpies “hoppity hopped” about.
Below Anvil Point I could hear the chug of a diesel engine and soon spotted a Crab Pot Vessel FY851 as it gently plodded east, close the cliffs. An absence of marker buoys suggest pots had been collected.
Upon Lighthouse Green I found good numbers of Pyramidal Orchids but only Bee Orchids stood proud with signs of two flower remnants.
As I pondered when I might see my first Marbled White of the year one came into view. This one was half way up/down in the sward calmly resting upon vegetation, however a second one flew into view. Adonis Blues were observed upon the Downland along with Meadow Browns. Speckled Woods reliably appeared close to the Small Copse whilst of course Six Spot Burnet Moths were on the wing.
Yesterday afternoon’s special Dolphin Watchers 30th Anniversary boat trip reported one Puffin, an Oystercatcher and the usual suspects including Guillemots, Razorbills, Kittiwakes and Fulmars.
