There once was a yellow yellow Yorlin
Who could not be heard out a ’calling
We searched the whole place
But could find no trace
So we’ll have to make do with a recording
As I entered the park this morning my eyes were drawn to the flickering wings of a Kestrel, attempting to hover in the still conditions. It soon gave up and coasted over the line of Holm Oaks to the east. Atop the canopy, a Carrion Crow croaked repeatedly, hailing the morning. It would be the first of many. Long Meadow continued to display a healthy population of Common Spotted Orchids and a dense population of Fleabane still yet to come in to flower.
Passing the Learning Centre a pair of Rabbits loped in front of me, vanishing into the undergrowth as a Wood Pigeon swam through the air a few feet above them. Dog Roses were in flower along the hedgerows, a wonderful blend of white and pink that I didn’t stop to smell. I must remember to do that next time.
Saxon Field was alive with birdsong and I observed several conversations through my binoculars. A Whitethroat chatted gaily with a Great Tit as they shared a patch of Blackthorn scrub, and Chiffchaffs and Chaffinches exchanged remarks at a distance. Just to be clear, I have no idea whether these birds were actually talking to each other, that’s just how it seemed at the time.
Past the Drove my ears pricked at the sound of drumming. A Greater Spotted Woodpecker was diligently working away. I also caught the yaffle and subsequent undulating flight of a Green Woodpecker arcing away from me. I also spied a few Meadow Pipits flitting around the hedgerows.
Far out on the meadows I was treated to the full, uninterrupted display of a Skylark, rising from among the long grass before me and into the air, circling slowly as it climbed and delivering its singular aria. I just wish I’d been quicker with my camera.
Up on the Downs I again searched in vain for the Yellow, Yellow Yorlin but I did come across a fine patch of Eyebright. I took a moment to get down on hands and knees to appreciate this miniature marvel. Welcome back Eyebright, It’s good to see you again.
