Before a rain shower came in I managed to catch site of a Green Woodpecker in flight. I welcomed the light rain as in cooled, refreshed and revitalised me at least! In the wildlife garden a show of Oxeye Daisies was accompanied by one Yellow Flag Iris flower whilst several white Water Lilly were showing signs of opening in the pond. Underneath a slab a pale green caterpillar a good inch long with a stripe down its back appeared to have been a Brimstone caterpillar.
With a beak clasping food, a Jay flew across the Goat Plot. Out over the wares a pair of Swifts were in flight. Meanwhile off shore some five Gannets flew low over the sea. Whilst the Guillemots could be heard from Tilly Whim it was a quartet of Razorbills that were fishing off there. Off Anvil Point a Fulmar made a visit whilst carpet of Kidney Vetch decorated the sward just below the Lighthouse. On the less stable bank a few stems of (Ox tongue?) Broomrape we visible with one in flower.
I delighted at finding my first Bee Orchids in flower upon Lighthouse Green. It may have been the first time that I noticed the Wild Gladioli with (to me) plum coloured flowers. Less obvious was the cluster of small pebble like Stomach Fungi upon the rabbit grazed sward. A trio of Swallows whizzed past the Lighthouse whilst a dozen Jackdaws were content exploring the grassland.
I progressed back up through the down land Skylarks were heard from over the meadows. Occasionally a Whitethroat inserted a “stonechat” chat chat into its song. Taking nectar from Horseshoe Vetch, on Lighthouse Road cutting, was a Silver Y Moth.
Upon the telegraph wire two Carrion Crow sat preening either side of the post. A Kestrel flew in and took up a perch upon the Upper Mile Marker Ladder.
