A lovely morning to have a walk around the meadows, the wind rippling through the growing grasses. The golden yellow Bulbous Buttercups and Meadow Buttercups providing a wonderful splash of colour.
Mixed in amongst these were the lilac flowers of Pale Flax, a few of these now open, below a scattering of Red Clover and Common Vetch.
Crawling up the stems of a Coltsfoot grass was a yellow and black caterpillar of Six-spot Burnet Moth, many other grasses now emerging include Rye Grass and Tor Grass.
Amongst the shorter downland turf the spikes of Early English Gentian are short while a few are also in bloom showing off the deep purple flower.
The bright yellow Horseshoe Vetch caught the eye alongside the deep blue Chalk Milkwort, these two plants covering patches, with the vetch providing a strong sweet smell.
By the Centre a House Sparrow moving in and out of a crack under the eaves, hopefully this bird now has chicks. While around the corner the Great Tits are on eggs (see the live footage in the Castle).
The moth trap from last night was a bit disappointing with just 9 species of macro moths including Flame Shoulder, Brimstone, Light Feathered Rustic, Pale Brocade and the strangely shaped Pale Prominent.
Down on the cliffs the seabirds are busy with the Guillemots sitting on eggs, about 2 weeks through their 4 weeks stint before the chicks hatch. A Razorbill on the water alongside a Shag which was flapping and flipping in the water have a bath.
Whizzing past was a Peregrine Falcon, then dipping in under the cliffs it disappeared from view.
The Hereford Cattle grazing on the far downland, leaving as usual the buttercups untouched. In amongst these beasts the spikes of flowers of the Early Purple Orchid showing superbly while the Early Spider Orchids are also still showing well, but going over.
