Upon the Learning Centre roof a pair of Tree Sparrow were perhaps acting more like House sparrows in that they were going in and out of a cavity between the roof and guttering. On departing from the centre a trio of Goldfinches were seen as a pair of Rabbits munched upon the grass at the scrub edge. I took in the scent of Blackthorn Blossom whilst watched by a Chaffinch. Another trio, this time it was Swallows that were hawking overhead.
I disturbed a Kestrel which was perched high up on the ladder of the lowest mile marker, however, it relocated with ease to a similar position upon the uppermost marker. On the ground below only a half dozen Jackdaw were investigating the sward. Meanwhile, it was simply a Wood Pigeon perched upon the overhead wires crossing the gully.
Out at sea I could see the silhouette of the Isle of Wight and made out a large container vessel heading west through see mist. However, closer to shore it was clear that Fishing Vessel PE1124 was heading west and had room to collect pots. Even at Tilly Whim I could pick up the fishy scent of sea bird “leavings” and heard the gaggling of Guillemot. On the cliff edge white flowers of Sea Campion had a “pantaloons” appearance thanks to the bulging bracts beneath them.
On the gully slopes Eyebright hugged the ground beside exposed rock. I believe I had both Birdsfoot Trefoil and Horseshoe Vetch occasionally seen in flower. Meanwhile I had to be content with the healthy conjoined leaves of Yellow Wort (my “Hilt-wort”!) giving promise of flowers to come. Two Lesser Bloody-nosed Beetles were observed along with tiny young (first instar) unidentified Grasshoppers. A large Buff-tailed Bumblebee, seen on the bare ground of a cattle track, was only one of the many that I had heard.
The black cap and salmon breast of a male Bullfinch appeared amongst relatively bare Sycamore. On the ground below I noted a Sycamore seedling with its two plaining linear “bracts” and two normal leaves, showing the trees attempts to spread into the open ground. A pair of Long-tailed Tits flitted and “tutted” through the gully floor scrub. Swallows flew up above over Lighthouse Green hawking for insects on the wing.
