Today I would have lost my hat again
High winds bombard the park without recess
Only Corvids and Gulls aloft remain
Sinking Iris sprouts sheltered from the stress
Blackbirds tumble over tangled brambles
Their calls projecting from the depths within
The path churned from passing bovine scrambles
I slip and slide then shuffle, twist and spin
Field Mushrooms rise from twixt the grasses
Common Puffballs growing in the pathways
Fairy Inkcaps cluster in small masses
In the woodland they hide from the sun’s rays
Last beside the sturdy weather station
A Haresfoot Inkcap stakes out the location
Other items of interest today included a Limpet shell on the Lighthouse slope, presumably dropped there by an untidy bird after dining. There were 8 Guillemots inhabiting the ledge, though I couldn’t spot any floating on the waves. Probably too rough for them. I also spied a Knapweed flower next to the Tilly Whim caves, the only one I saw all morning.
Beside the Lighthouse, there was a preponderance of Browntailed Moth nests woven into a patch of scrub. A little further on a Rock Pipit dived off the cliff edge, the smallest bird I saw to brave the elements. Finally, to round off a very good round of fungi sightings, a log on the woodland walk supported an impressive coating of Rosy Crust. I’d highly recommend a stroll through the woods today folks. There’s great fungi to be seen and you’ll be sheltered from the wind. Marvelous.
