It started as an atmospheric misty morning with the vegetation having been revitalised by a little rainfall! The forecast was hopeful suggesting sunshine for this evening’s outdoor performance of “The Commercial Traveller” by the unique and entertaining Rude Mechanicals!
Initially I saw one lone Hereford cattle but it was soon joined by the mooing movement of a trail of livestock leaving the upper gully scrub for the coastal slope.
For a second day a Greater Black Backed Gull perched high and directly above the Guillemot cave. However, this potential predator of chicks paid no attention to the one hundred or so birds below, instead peering inland or out to sea. A mere thirty Guillemots appeared upon the sea a very loose formation. Rock Pipits put in an appearance at Tilly Whim steps and the gully mouth. Beside the top “cave” gate a Tamarisk stem of some age had finally either broken off in the wind or under its own weight as it over reached itself.Beside the Lighthouse Road bridge plum sized Pears were developing whilst on its approaches I notice the berries upon the vines of Bryony. Crossing the short rabbit grazed, wind-blown sward of the “peak” of Lighthouse Green I noticed a grouping of short Yellow Wort which resembled a fleet of tall ships! Wild Thyme was encroaching across limestone and concrete surfaces. One Pyramidal Orchid flower stem had grown at forty five degree angel thus being only five centre of the ground instead of twelve!
Water droplets had made many hunting spider nursery tents more visible in the meadows, however, I was less pleased to discover a spread of Brown Tailed Moth caterpillar webs within the gorse alongside the diagonal path. Some of the Hemp Agrimony clump beside “Ron’s Rest” bench were beginning to open their flowers. Once under the tree cover I heard the “pitter, patter” of rain drops upon the large leaves of a Sycamore. Meanwhile, a carpets of crunch leaves and flowers from the Holm Oak had in places obscured the path.
Returning to the centre Rosa reminded that we have a Glastonbury Weekend, so unlike those revellers I went inside to reduce my dampness!
