I glimpsed a Jay as I arrived in the car park. From the thick grass margins near the learning centre I heard the high pitch squeaks of a small mammal. I thought to myself that I aught set some live capture traps to discover which creatures I am hearing. Reliably a Chaffinch sang from up on high then between walling centre an d wares a pair of Dunnock were echoing each other’s call from a thirty metre stand off! As I meandered through a sun drenched goat plot I saw two Magpie in flight and later found five plucked magpie feathers. A Wasp briefly basked in the sun upon post and rail fencing whilst Hoverflies did what they do. Then a Kestrel sized bird flew past. It struck me as different indeed slow and I was surprised when it landed three quarters the way up the lower mile marker ladder. Luckily its roosting there enabled me to identify the bird with is grey plumage as a Merlin. From such a vantage point it had a good prospect over the open ground of the goat plot and the ride and glades of the diagonal path. Eventually it took flight seaward seemingly just missing a score of Jackdaws. The later made lit fuss other than adjusting their flight and one member to up lookout in the Merlin’s former spot. I also saw a flash of yellow dive into a cloud of yellow. No custard involved but a Yellowhammer and Gorse flowers. The briefest trill of a Wren was heard from the cover of scrub.
At Tilly Whim steps a Great Tit called from some Tamarisk. A Chiff Chaff that I was poorly hidden in the open branches of another Tamarisk bush. Jackdaws loitered either side of the coast path and at one point a cloud of fifty congregated. Upon the sea some fifty Guillemots including at least three Razorbills were seen and heard. The cave ledge seemed quite full containing near eighty birds and sending a fishy small up to the coast path. I sneakily cut through the coastal woodland initially following a Badger track. I found a tiny conical snail amongst the moss upon a Sycamore trunk. I investigated and it was suggested to Lesser Bulin or Ena Obscura!
