Thursday 2nd March, 2017

A glorious spring morning, with not a cloud in the sky and the sun starting to warm the air – very welcome, with a biting westerly wind demonstrating that winter still has a sting in the tail.

Along the clifftop, white horses gallop across a blue sea, with even whiter Gannets sailing by – close enough that not only their black wingtips, but also their creamy-yellow heads are visible.

Closer to the cliffs, Fulmars (our only native Albatross) wheel in lazy spirals, while below them tiny black and white Guillemots flicker by as they check out the ledges.

A Great Black-backed Gull flaps by, with a Shag flapping along (in rather prehistoric fashion). Unusually, a Cormorant flies by above the Globe, revealing the distinctive white patches at his throat and thigh.

At Tilly Whim, Adders are sunbathing on the slopes above the steps, with a Common Lizard seen on the Diagonal Path.

A few Meadow Pipits and Pied Wagtail coming in off the sea, with a noisy flock of Jackdaws squabbling overhead, with a Raven calling raucously from the top of the mile markers.

Above Caravan Terrace, Goldcrests flutter among the branches of Holm Oaks, with a Firecrest also seen, along with Bullfinch, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch and Great Tit all feeding or calling from the scrub around the terrace.

A Kestrel hangs above the Lighthouse, with a Buzzard spiralling up on the thermals above the back meadows.

A Roe Deer bounds across South Field, where the leaves of Cowslips and Crow Garlic can be found among the grass.
