Saturday 28th January 2017

A magnificent sunrise this morning across the water, the sun after a short while disappearing behind a small bank of cloud, as the shafts of light angled out sideways turning everything a shade of pinky-mauve.

Out across the meadows which are very wet and muddy underfoot, the sound of a Great Tit could be heard, the squeaky bicycle pump sound echoing loudly across the airwaves.

In the hedgerows a few bright spots of Stinking Iris berry peered out amongst the tumbling ropes of Old Man’s Beard and green leaves of the Ivy.

Overhead a Meadow Pipit called, the high pitched noise bringing them to my attention as they flew by, as I watched they landed in the centre of the grassland, disappearing behind the tufts.

Out onto the downs where the views across to the Isle of Wight in the east and St Aldhelm’s Head to the west were superb.  On the ground the strange sight of an Ox-eye Daisy, growing on almost no stem, but one single flower all alone.

To the cliffs where the Guillemots were packed onto their ledge, well over one-hundred of these black and white auks standing erect, on the seaward end of this ledge was a Herring Gull, looking much bigger and whiter, while on the water more  Guillemots and at least 5 Razorbills were bobbing up and down in the surf.

Zooming along the cliff face was a Fulmar, such superb fliers, barely twitching a feather as they changed direction, but avoiding the cliffs by what looks like a whisker, on closer inspection the black feathers around the eye could be seen.

A Grey Squirrel was scampering along the branches of the Field Maple by the car park.

Last night as I walked down the hill in the dark a Badger was trundling down alongside me, its swinging gait and claws clipping on the tarmac bringing it to my attention, the Badger then snorted loudly at me and disappeared through the wall to continue its search for dinner.
