Tuesday 20 December, 2018

Long Meadow was quiet so I sneaked through the woodland edge to the coast path where I noticed Roe Deer slots which indicated travel in the opposite direct. From the Brady bench there were clear views of the exposed Peveril Ledges, Old Harry and the buildings of Bournemouth were fortunately shrouded in mist.

Again a Grey Squirrel perched at top the castle bird feeder cage. Both seeds and nuts need be replenished but there was enough for Blue Tits, Great Tits and a Robin to visit it. Within the coast scrub a few fruits including Rose Hips, Haws and rather pruned Bryony berries were up for grabs!

This morning was one of buoys & gulls! Yes it was rather overcast which meant the Peveril Ledge Marker buoy and blue hulled fishing vessel PE1124 port light and Anvil Point lighthouse lamp all were illuminated. This solo fisherman had half a dozen Herring Gull followers!  Over the Castle around fifteen Lesser Black Backed Gulls rode a thermal. Above the observation point some fifty Jackdaw swirled. Later I noticed Carrion Crows twice scatter Jackdaws once from Sycamore below the lighthouse and again from an Ash beside the learning centre.

Off the cliffs a Peregrine Falcon gently glided westward. At sea a Cormorant flew east another west while one (perhaps the same one) fish on the sea off Tilly Whim. I was rather surprised to discover sixty Guillemots so silently and inactively huddled on their cave like ledge. I can assure the electric fence is working and I was happy to see the Hereford Cattle all above the road from a change. Vibrant red / orange fungal spores had quickly populated a relatively fresh cow pat.

I squelched in clay churned by cattle hooves whilst the wind whispered through the Tor Grass. As I approached the small Copse I lost sight of the Kestrel which had appeared to have been hovering nearby. My appearance seemed to send two sprightly Herford Cattle gambling off like lambs, similarly I sent two Magpies into the copse. Whilst I tried to see the Wren that I could hear a Green Woodpecker waffled laughter like behind me.
