Thursday 15 December, 2016

After yesterday our wintery weather has returned giving a rather grey day with poor light for observations.

I watched a string over approximately one hundred Guillemots flying from shore to sea, although inevitably there were the odd few going in the opposite direction! At least two Cormorant’s braved the sea with one fishing and another seen preening. Today Greater Black Backed Gulls were seen further inland where I suspected they were using a thermal as did Carrion Crows, Jackdaws and perhaps later the Kestrel seen between Goat Plot and Wares had made use of it also.

On three occasions a flock of fourteen Blackbird sized birds flitted about. As soon as I managed to approach them on scrub they took flight. As Katie saw Redwing I suspect that they were this group.  We appear to have a tremendous number of Jackdaws at present. There was an initial plume spiralling upward of a score. Later a distinctive castle two score joined with the Lighthouse thirty merging over the gully. Despite this there were straggler speckled elsewhere.

Colour in the countryside came in the form reliable of yellow Gorse flowers, red / orange Bryony fruit and similarly Stinking Iris berries. Today I saw further fresh daisy flowers which a clearly associated with the mown footpaths and car park verges. Orange Lichen encrusted otherwise bare Elder branches. Meanwhile where the Blackbirds explored under scrub the green leaves of Stinking Iris and Harts Tongue Fern brought colour. Otherwise a rather quiet still day although lapping wavelets could be heard on a choppy sea. Whilst Robin’s and Great Tits and Blue Tits put in an appearance within the scrub they were not numerous.
