Within the castle grounds both Rosemary and Valerian were in flower. As I looked across Durlston bay the rolling waves crashed into the shore deterring any sea birds from gathering upon the water. Excellent views of the entire Isle of Wight were to be seen.
During my travels the Raven flock increased in numbers from 8 perch on the castle, to 15 off the observation point then a group of 50 performing a cliff top swirl. From the alcove observation point I sought out sea birds. In doing so I flushed a Wren from the interface between dry stone wall and stunted cliff top Blackthorn. Lower down upon the coastal rock face stood a solitary Rock Pipit further eastward than the other day. Both Herring Gulls and Greater Black Backed Gulls were passing by although more headed east perhaps away from the advancing rain front. Only a couple of Cormorant dared head westward!
Upon rounding Durlston Head I walked towards dark skies delivering rain in the distance. Rumbling waves sent spray upon the rocks at the gully mouth. A few flocks flew westward which were either Linnets and or Goldfinches. I had hope they might turn around or rest upon the overhead wires to give me a clearer view, however, today’s light helped little. Some eight Carrion Crow did perform the courtesy of posing on the telegraph wires! Although not surprised by the call of a Raven I was delighted to witness the pair together who disappeared into the woodland cover by the Goat Plot.
Upon the gully southernmost facing slope an ant hill was most evident as it presented itself with a covering of Red Fescue amongst a patch of Tor Grass. Ash trees showed their dark brown / black buds which give it its name. An unidentified leaf call had made an impact on a Holm Oak leaf then below, both Bramble and Madder showed dark black fruits still. Worm casts were evident where trample grassland has meets the coast path.
If my nose felt cold and my eyes ran above Tilly Whim I wondered how the crew on the sailing vessel fared, at least they were following the wind. I headed of the retrieve my socks from
