Thursday 12th May 2016

A drab drizzly morning for a walk, the sounds of birds in the scrub a delight to behold as they contacted each other in the merk.

The chatting of a Stonechat in amongst the Blackthorn, this small black headed bird eventually spotted, the orange breast visible as it turned towards me.

The tumbling arms of Old Man’s Beard now covered in newly emerged leaves, while hopping through them a Dunnock and Wren.

The song of a Lesser Whitethroat wafted from the wildlife pond area, while Common Whitethroat was both seen and heard in the vicinity.

A wonderful view of a Willow Warbler and a Chiffchaff as they sat almost side by side on the branches of the Apple tree, which is also now has blossom covered.

Popping its head up along the diagonal path was a Dartford Warbler, looking a little bedraggled in this morning’s rain (as was I), this bird perched on the top of the bright yellow Gorse.

In the meadows the Cowslips are still looking fantastic, but coming up as well are the deeper gold coloured Bulbous Buttercups.  The grasses also growing fast as Yorkshire Fog, Crested Dog’s Tail and Tall Fescue can be identified amongst others.

Standing against the hedgerow backdrop was a Roe Deer, his antlers showing as he turned his head, in the shorter grass in front a number of young Rabbits were chasing about.

Down by the cliffs the gargling call of Guillemots, many of them on the water bobbing as they washed.  Also in this group was a Razorbill, the darker black coloured feathers showing up well.

Whizzing past, as they arrived from the south were 2 Swallows and 3 Swifts.
