I get in at 7am and for once a mostly cloudy morning, with the odd patches of blue sky, and mild. This morning I needed to change the battery for the Cattle Electric fence, so I go straight into the garage take the new battery and head off. Within the Learn Centre, as I look out for birds (being careful not to mistake the bird ringers bird recording) I spot a Wren up in Sycamore, a Chaffinch, Chiffchaff is heard in the opposite direction from the bird ringers, a Grey Wagtail observed near the bird hide, a Robin and Dunnocks are seen between scrubs such as Hawthorn and Goldfinches singing away in Blackthorn.
As I walk on with my wheelbarrow and battery into Lighthouse Field, I spot plants such as Restharrow, Ragwort, Common Fleabane, Brown Knapweed, Red Bartsia, Birds-foot Trefoil, Wild Carrot, Wild Parsnip, Woolly Thistle, Yarrow, Hawksweed Oxtongue. While a Jay screech is heard in the distance, around six Jackdaws are seen flying towards the English Channel, a couple of Crows resting on the path, a Stonechat is calling away left of me, a Great Tit sits on a very wind-blown Hawthorn, and what I believe could be a Red-tail Bumblebee on a Wild Carrot.
Into Field 10 I spot one of the Herefords grazing away in Field 6, and a male Blackbird feeding away. I change the battery and check whether it is working – It’s ticking away and working. I then turn it off to check the fence line. While doing so, Lady’s Bedstraw, Field Bindweed, Lots of Bracken that needs the Herefords to ideally disturb it, Agrimony, and plenty of Meadow Brown butterflies. The fence line needed to be fixed, with wires all over the place and broken, while fixing a Yellowhammer can be heard calling within the scrub in front of me.
Once done I needed to rush back to the office to ensure this diary is written up, checking the weather records for this month. It is another day without rain, it’s looking like this whole month is remaining rainless!
