Tuesday 16th September 2025

The sound of cows mooing accompanied my wander towards where they are, the gates, electric fence and trough checked and all was well.

Taking flight from the ground was a flock of Meadow Pipits, their pinkish-orange legs catching the sunlight and their feather markings looking crisp.

As I ducked under a huge cobweb, stretched across the route between wo Blackthorn bushes, I disturbed a large Garden Spider (Araneus diadematus), which then dropped rapidly on a single silk cord.  Captured and bound within the web was a moth – looked like a Lesser Yellow Underwing in size and upper wing marking but couldn’t be sure!

A twittering flock of birds was popping between the Gorse, focussing in the yellow of the Blue Tit and the Great Tit easily seen as was the long tails of the Long-tailed Tits. A few moments spent enjoying the antics of this group, with the looping fluttering flight and constant chatter of the pink and black and grey tits always fun.

I was distracted by a sudden rush as a flock of Feral Pigeons tore through the sky and then disappeared over the cliff edge.  Skimming along, just above the white crest and the grey churning surface of the water was a Shag.

A sudden screech and above a Peregrine Falcon looked to be chasing a Herring Gull, or it could have been the other way round. As these two birds came together something was dropped down into the water – neither bird getting the spoils!  As a second Peregrine flew past their calls echoed along the cliff face.

A little later, I had brilliant view of one Peregrine perched on an outcrop, distinctive with its white collar at the front, dark grey back and dark beak.

Along the rocks the thick leaves of Rock Samphire providing a bit of a mat, a couple of Rock Pipits called to each other and looking more closely at the ground the small spiral shells of Cochlicella acuta could be seen slowly moving along the leaves.
