Saturday 23rd August 2025

A walk through the Victorian woodland, where the blue sky and sunlight was percolating through the tree canopy, providing dappling effects on the ground! Highlighted in one of these was a Fox, its fur glowing brightly as it wandered up and over the wall,

The easily recognisable opposite leaves of the Ash crossing with the large three lobes of the Horse Chestnut, many of which are becoming brown and crinkled.

As I looked up, there was movement of the branches and a Grey Squirrel sprang between the two trees, a waver of its tail as it clung on, before scampering towards the trunk.

The sound of small birds halted my wander as I looked upwards for movement, eventually a flutter, and I could zoom in and watch a gorgeous Firecrest as it hung upside down – great views of its orange flash of a crest, as well as the white striped face.

A stand of Dogwood was attracting a variety of Hoverflies – at least 3 species on the berries and leaves – I will have to come back for the exact species identification as they weren’t ones I could recognise instantly!

Appearing along the path as I continued a variety of signs, directing this morning’s 9am parkrun event on the correct route, won’t be much time for them to admire the bright red berries of Lords and Ladies as they trot past!

The lack of water continues to affect the Hydrangeas, their white flowers and green leaves both wilting as are the couple of Rhododendrons, the Bamboo however continues to look fine.

At sea a fleet of sailing boat heading westwards, a jet ski whizzing past and the sound of the sea-rowers, reminding me to check our Children’s Boat Trail, so a quick trip around the clifftop.

The pale purple flowers of Sea Aster showing well, while the Golden Samphire has gone over in places but still blooming in others as is the thick succulent leaves of the Rock Samphire.

A Wall Brown butterfly landed on a bare rock, as a Peacock perched on a patch of Hemp Agrimony.  Walking back past the spot where a young Adder was seen yesterday, about the size of a pencil.
