Monday 14 July, 2025

It’s another sunny morning; all be it windier than of late. I go into Field 34 where I spot Tufted Vetch, Ash, many a Gatekeeper around Brambles and Blackthorn, as large strips of Hogweed are seen in front. As I head towards the gate into South Field, one passes a mass of Bracken, with Field Maple to the right, and an Ash to the left.
In South Field many wildflowers are still spotted, such as Birds-foot Trefoil, Red Bartsia, Wild Carrot, Bristly Ox-tongue, Agrimony, Red Clover, Yellow Rattle (not looking so yellow anymore), Field Bindweed, Rough Hawksbit, Knapweed, Common Flax, Pepper Saxifrage, and Ribwort Plantin. Also spotted was Marbled White on Ribwort Plantain, Soldier Beetles on Wild Carrot, many a Gatekeeper butterfly, and the sound of crows as well as Bush-crickets and Grasshoppers.

Into Saxon Field both Field Scabious and Small Scabious are seen, as well as Lady’s Bedstraw, and Wild Parsnip, heard are the Skylarks in the distance singing away above the wildflower meadows. As I walk on towards Lighthouse Field, I see many Crows, Marbled White Butterfly, more Wild Carrots in abundance, and a Small Blue butterfly, as well as a Six-spotted Burnet Moth fluttering around in the tall grass with bumpy topography caused by the Yellow Meadow Ants.

Into Lighthouse field where Stinking Iris is spotted around the gate, many Woolly Thistle can be seen, the yellow from the Ragwort is also present. From here a Shag can be seen from below Tilly Whim caves and a Herring Gull around the Lighthouse.

I have a look over the clifftop trail, past Tilly Whim… Quiet! Guillemots have gone! The mothers must have flown away and the chicks that have managed to survive the Ravens to fledge will be carried out on the sea for 5 to 7 weeks or so until the chick is able to become independent.

By the Learning Centre and around the weather station Pyramidal Orchids are seen as well as Speckled Wood and Gatekeeper butterflies. Whilst recording the weather of the past 24 hours I spot a Kestrel hovering nearby looking for prey.
