Friday 28th March 2025

A male Roe Deer was standing still, gazing ahead as if watching something. His antlers showing well against the sky. Alongside, laying in the grass was a female Roe Deer her coat dark.

Some of patches of scrub are now beginning to turn white, as the Blackthorn blossom opens up from the previously tightly shut buds.

At the base of one of these clumps a patch of yellow Primroses with nearby a False Oxlip – which looks quite similar to the Primrose and the Cowslip – of which it is a combination.

Perched amongst the branches of a Field Maple was a gorgeous male Sparrowhawk.  As I looked through my binoculars his eye was a vivid orange ring around the dark pupil.  His feathers around the neck a reddish-pink, contrasting with the dark blue-grey shoulders.

In the corner of the Holm Oak and Elm dominated woods a Goldcrest flitted amongst the twigs, which made me look more closely and a Firecrest was then also spotted.

From the scrub around the Diagonal path came the call of a Cirl Bunting, alongside those of Stonechat, Blackbird and Goldfinch.

A sea of activity around the coast, with the ledges chocka with Guillemots, back after a few days away, the hustle and bustle great to see and hear.  On the water another 80 or so Guillemots, but strangely today only 10 Razorbills noted, whereas there were 50 the other day and almost not Guillemots!

6 Fulmars soaring in large squashed ovals while another sat slumped on a ledge, cackling as the others passed by.

The honk call of a Shag drew to my attention, one flying in, a slight greenish tinge to it, while Jackdaws were arriving on the cliffs with beakfuls of nesting material.

More flowers starting to emerge with the tall stems of Green Alkanet topped with vibrant blue flowers, the white bells of 3-cornered Leek and the large trumpets of Daffodils.
