I start the Wildlife Diary early, just past 07:30, the weather is fair with high cloud allowing some particles of the sun rays through. I walk through the car park, here I can hear a Wren, Dunnock, and Robin, and above me I see a Blackbird perched on a Sycamore tree.
I take the Lighthouse Road passing the gate, a Wood Pigeon is heard in the background, I see a Robin clicking away in Blackthorn, Goldfinch flies above me and another is heard somewhere in the scrub. Around the Goat Plot direction I hear a Chiffchaff. I walk on, spotting 2x Magpies chilling in lighthouse field – 2 for joy they say – exactly what is needed for today! As I walk on, I spot a rocky seat, in front there are 2x Daffodils beside there is some Brambles and Blackthorn with Lords and Ladies and Stinking Iris under it. As I walk towards the bridge a Chaffinch is chaffing away within the ditch valley. Down there I notice it is extraordinarily quiet, as I walk closer a Kestrel is spotted. I did manage to hear a Robin, Meadow Pipit, Chaffinch and Pheasant in the distance.
I take my walk right down to the lighthouse, and around it, passing the blow hole and up a steep hill, pass a gate and Tilly Whim. Here I can see the Guillemot cliff cave full of these wonderful species. Also on the English Channel I spot Guillemots with Razorbills amongst them, 2 or 3 Shags, Fulmar, a Herring Gull and on the cliffs Jackdaws and Feral Pigeon.
I continue the clifftop route up to the viewpoint, head up to the castle and round into the wood. Here the Canopy layer is Holm Oak and Sycamore, the field layer is full of Brambles, the ground layer is full of Ground Ivy, Stinking Iris, Harts-Tongue Ferns, Hard-shield Ferns. I pass a Laurel bush, Ashes with Ivy. Here I hear and see a Robin, Crow, Blackcap, Song Thrush, Greenfinch, Great Tit, Blue Tit, and Magpies.
Have a great Wednesday!
