Tuesday 31 December, 2024

Another dull overcast morning stretches across the park, though this time accompanied by a strong wind. Heading through the car park I notice a grassed area with a smattering of Daisys in flower, the bright white flowers standing out in the dark green of the grass.

Down in the Dell the sound of two Blue Tits calling to each other pulls my attention to an Ash Tree. The two birds’ flit amongst the bare branches before being joined by a lone Great Tit. Below a Wren comes to land on the dry-stone wall, it hops form one capping stone to another, waggling its tail and calling out.

Coming round the corner at the bottom of the steep hill the wind picks up as it slaps me in the face. The flash of gold catches my eye as a lone Goldfinch comes to land on the wall below the Globe. It takes flight again passing over my head as it visibly struggles against the wind.

A Great Black Backed Gull patrols the top of the cliffs, while below a constant stream of Guillemots make there way back into the cliff ledge. They arrive in a constant stream of frantic wings beats while a raft of about 30 bobs about on the rough sea. Arriving at the glass observation point Fulmars can be seen swooping in and out of the cliff. The stream of Guillemots is only interrupted by the occasionally Shag joining the queue to get into the cliffs. Looking back at the ledge from Tilly Whim, its looking packed, though there’s still some room for the birds still streaming in and filling all the surrounding ledges.

Down in the Gully I watch two Peregrine Falcons hover briefly above, before the separate and go in opposite directions. One heads towards the castle and one towards the light house.

At the top of the light house road, I watch a Raven soar over top of the canopy of the small copse.
