Monday 23rd December 2024

A gorgeous early morning, the sun a bright orange orb in the blue sky, providing a clear crisp light.

Highlighted against the yellow flowering Gorse were two Roe Deer.  As they watched me, their ears were also twisting, alert for danger.

The large ears were fringed with dark black hairs contrasting with the chestnut of the rest of their face.

Another pace from me and the bounded off uphill, the white rumps flashing as these Roe Deer moved.

From another area of Gorse and Blackthorn, came the ticking call of a Robin, whose orange-red breast was showing.  Also in the scrub a Dunnock, its grey head poking between the thorny branches.

The new fence line along the downs and coast path was being used as a perch by a group of Jackdaws, their cackling heard as they rose as one.

Hopping through the netting a Blackbird, this dark bird using its tail to balance on the thin wire.

In the nearby meadow, using my binoculars for a quick sweep of the view, 5 Pheasants spotted. Two were males, the colourful head and body markings being lit by the sun’s rays.  Three females a more mottled pale brown colour, two taking flight in a noisy flap!

As I checked an uncovered water pipe (now fixed), the junction section was covered in Badger poo, seems a popular spot for their latrine!

Flitting along the coast path was a Rock Pipit, its high-pitched calling catching the ear, as it landed the bobbing of the tail also easily seen.

Above my head a screeching sound and a Peregrine Falcon whizzed overhead, the dark shape of this bird of prey then disappearing around the headland.
