A wonderful sunny morning, not a cloud in the sky and just the right temperature for a walk. Heading through the top of light house field accompanied by the glorious views out to sea, an array of wildflowers can be seen in flower. Common Daises are scattered all amongst the short grass, white flowers still curled soon to open in the morning sun. Buttercups are already starting to open their bright yellow flowers while above the yellow fluffy flowers of Hawksbeard are also unfurling.
Red Sorrel sways gently in the light breeze accompanied by the pale blue flowers of Pale Flax. Yellow Rattle and White Clover creep their way around the bottom of the taller plants. From above the continuous melody from several Skylarks all blend. A Kestrel hovers over the Saxon field before diving down to catch something though is unsuccessful. At the gate into the next field a Gatekeeper Butterfly living up to its name, flutters around my feet as I pass through.
Next to the gate leading into Oxeye meadow a pile of stones can be seen surrounded by Wild Clary in flower and Woody Nightshade, while an Adder sunbaths on the stones in the middle. Further along the path the Kestrel reappears hovering over the gully before diving down and out of sight. Eventually reappearing when I reach the gate into field 6. This time it carries some sort of small rodent in its claws, it comes to land in a tree a little ahead of me and tucks into its breakfast.
Heading up the slope immediately left as you enter field 6, I first spot some Common Spotted Orchids. Followed by a large patch of the darker purple Pyramidal Orchids and just a little further on Bee Orchids, all within 5 meters of each other.
Over the ridge and back into field 10 to say good morning to the cows and check their water trough. The cows lounge around chewing the cud near the trough having a lazy Sunday morning. though the Skylarks in their field aren’t having a lazy morning as two fights for chance to sit a lot a way marker post, which the cows have used as a scratching post and partially knocked over. One gives up and takes to the sky to sing.
