A very grey morning, especially after the slither of sun which rose above the horizon and then disappeared into the thick cloud.
The Hereford Cattle were grazing amongst the Blackthorn and scrub of the Lighthouse Field. The sound of their munching could be heard above the faint rustling of the leaves in the trees.
As I walked across the downland, from just by my feet a Meadow Pipit erupted, the mottled brown and white plumage so well hidden amongst the pale brown clumps of Tor Grass that I didn’t see it until I had almost trod on it. As it flew the colours were the same as the ground beneath - such good camouflage.
A gorgeous Jay wafted over the woodland, a splash of blue and white, plus the deep buffy pink of its body.
A tinkling call came from 3 birds as they flitted above the Hawthorn, landing amongst the spiky twigs, the dull light just catching the gold markings on its wings. These Goldfinches are around at this time of year, providing interest and excitement!
In the longer grass a purple colour caught my eye, is it a violet? – how exciting at this time of year. I bent down to search amongst the grass and was disappointed to find it was the torn off corner of a wrapper of a Fredo chocolate!!!
However a few other flowers to spot included Daisy, Winter Heliotrope and Gorse.
