Entering south field, I’m greeted by Roe Deer doe galloping across the field coming to hold near a patch of scrub in the middle of the field. It quietly nibbles on the surrounding grass as I walk past. It only notices me after I pass it, its eyes glued to me until I pass through the gate.
Wild Carrot, Knapweed and Red Clover line the path adding splash of colour across the whole field. The sound of crickets floats out of the grass all around, while the quieter sound of Yellow Rattle rattling can be detected amongst the noise of the crickets.
Oldman’s Beard covered in tiny fluffy white flowers, creeps its way round the Black Thorn. The large purple flowers of Spear Thistle stand high over the rest of the meadow, there prickles scratching me as I pass.
A small rodent scurry across the path, to quick to properly identify but I suspect is a Vole. Skylarks chase each over the top of oxeye meadow. Crossing the sleeper bridge Marbled White and Meadow Brown Butterfly’s flutter about in this more sheltered area. Heading over the hill I’m hit by the familiar sound of Skylarks singing high in the sky over the downs.
Two Peregrine Falcons swoop over the top of the gully, coming to land on a rocky outcropping of the gully. One fly’s off leaving the other alone. I walk down the gully to get a better view of the bird before it spokes and fly’s off.
