Into the lighthouse field this morning to look for flowers, and I wasn’t disappointed (but how could you be!).  Some patches of Chalk Milkwort providing a covering of deep blue against the short green grass and bare earth. Taller stems of Salad Burnet waving their round globe like heads in the gently breeze while the orange-golden yellow of Bird’s-foot Trefoil adds more colour.

The Horseshoe Vetch, a delicate horseshoe shape of petals mostly a butter yellow, but in places there are some which are a much paler yellow.

As I crouched down to look at these, my eye was drawn to a patch of rose like flowers, very thin delicate yellow petals, the flower head about the size of a £1 coin, Common Rock Rose.

Unusually it is possible to see both the going over stalks and flowers of Early Spider Orchid and the about to flower Bee Orchids growing alongside each other, perhaps the effects of weather?

After these delicate it is a great contrast to see the tall, thick stemmed and deep cerise pink flowers of the Gladious.  Just alongside a Rock Pipit strutted, to me they look to have extra large feet!

Flittering in front of me the brilliant turquoise blue on an Adonis Blue butterfly, the wings catching the sun as it moved – my first of the year.  Also seen was a Small Blue (grey underneath and almost brown on top, but very small when perched as folds up to show just one pair of wings.  Common Blue, Wall Brown and Speckled Wood added to the list.

As I finished my walk – aiming for the Learning Centre, I came across two huge piles of dog poo at the edge of the path about 10m from the poo bin – some dog owners are just so lazy, clearing up after your dog is just one of the things that is part of owning a dog, along with stroking it, walking it and feeding it! (piles now cleared – always carry a bag!)
