Thursday 6th April 2023

The sound of birds singing filled the early morning air, the Greenfinches wheezing and the House Sparrows chattering begun the patrol near the Centre.

Further along, perched on the top of the beautiful blossoming Blackthorn was a Chaffinch, the dark blue wings stripes catching the early morning sunlight.

Out on the downs Meadow Pipits fluttering up and down above the old quarry workings, while Skylarks were in full voice higher in the sky, brown dots against the grey -blue clouds.

On the ground a scattering of blue from the Hairy Violets, a dash from the early Chalk Milkwort flowers and the edges of the closed up Speedwells.  While admiring these flowers I spotted a tiny Early Spider Orchid, its brown furry body just opened, a number of other have spikes awaiting sunshine and warmth.

Slowly wandering across the path was an Oil Beetle, a metallic blue-purple catching the sunlight, as were the smaller Lesser Bloody-nosed Beetles.

The cliffs alive with activity, as the Fulmars soared and wheeled, the Herring Gulls raucously cried and Guillemots could be heard growling and gargling to each other.

Strangely on the water, only 3 Razorbills amongst the 70 Guillemots, a marked difference to Monday when there were 31 Razorbills and 6 Guillies.

On the ends of the twigs of Hawthorn, leaves sheafed, was a Stonechat, nearby Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Bullfinch all seen.

The meadows are now starting to turn yellow, as the Cowslips begin to show and grow.

Around the Crack Willows, the sound of a buzzing, the Buff-tailed Bumble Bees that were looking for the nectar from the soft grey pussy willow.
