Saturday 11th February, 2023

This morning  I made myself walk up the steepness of Panorama Rd. On the verge beside the Townsend Reserve were a patch of white Greater Periwinkle flowers, a clump of Daffodils, and a long carpet like strip of Winter Heliotrope in flower. I wondered why someone thought it appropriate to throw rubbish over our high livestock fence onto the reclaimed landfill site. Yesterday, Mel and removed awkward bundles of old damaged stock netting that had been awaiting collection since we installed the new fence line. I hope our tidy up might changes the behaviour of others….

I heard Chaffinches and then the calls of many Greenfinches in the Warren. Off course a Cockerel and Sheep, from California Farm, as well a cock Pheasant added to the soundscape. My route had been chosen so to check upon the Hereford Cattle in Field 1 & 2. Initially Field one looked empty until calves appeared from Hingston Copse. As approximately a score of young, weaned calves remained I knew we would need to prepare the north of Saxon field for grazing. A trio of Carrion Crows flew west over the drove but called before joining another already upon the ground nearby. Sticky, brown fingertip size Sweet Chestnut buds were beside the drove. From within the cloud came the rumble of a aircraft.

It was a Goldfinch duo that benched on the dense scrub patch in field 3. Perched in bare Hawthorn, with much Ivy cover nearby, a Thrush dove to the ground, possible having spotted a Snail. Two joggers passed silently through the landscape, unlike the pair of dog walkers who’s jolly (but loud) chatter and dog calling, interrupted the relaxing soundscape. I approached a predominantly bark-less Elder in search of fungi, instead only to send a male Pheasant silently scampering off! Out of sight the scratchy calls of a Jay rang out. The thirty odd dots upon Lighthouse Green were in fact Jackdaws, albeit amongst cow pats. As often happens, they rose, some to land on the overhead wires whilst others chose the Lighthouse complex rooftops as perches. From the Goat Plot I spied a dozen Guillemots upon the sea. A pair of peeping Great Tits, then a Blue Tit duo were amongst this morning bird pairings
